Emergency Procedures
The school has a plan to ensure the safety of students during any kind of emergency This plan is available in every classroom and from the school office. Safety drills are conducted regularly. Emergency equipment, supplies, and communication equipment are kept on site.
Finley Emergency Drill Procedures
Fire:
1. Fire alarm sounds and lights flash.
2. Students immediately evacuate the room in a calm, organized manner.
3. Teacher closes the door.
4. Teacher walks students to designated location on the field and distributes the student identification cards.
5. Teacher verifies number of present students and writes missing students on verification slip.
6. The designated staff members in charge of student supervision of the student assembly area collect all of the accountability reports and take them to the Command Center.
7. Teacher and students wait for “all clear” signal and return to class.
Earthquake:
1. PA announcement of an earthquake event with instructions to duck and cover.
2. When shaking stops PA announcement it’s safe, students immediately evacuate the room.
3. Teacher gathers the emergency bag with the student’s identification cards and roll sheet, walks students out of the room, and leaves the door open for search and rescue.
4. Teacher walks students to designated location on the field and takes roll and completes accountability report.
5. Teacher verifies number of present students and writes missing students on accountability report and has it ready for one of the designated teachers in charge of the student assembly area.
6. The designated teachers in charge of supervision of the student assembly area collect the accountability reports and deliver them to the Command Center.
7. Teacher and students wait for “all clear” signal and return to class.
Lockdown:
1. PA announcement of a Lockdown.
2. All people enter first available room that locks.
3. Teacher locks door, students get on ground out of line-of-sight from the windows as best as possible.
4. Teacher takes roll, emails School Office Manager and the principal with the number present and identifies who is missing.
5. If this is a drill, expect a tug on the door.
6. Remain sheltered until notified the danger has passed.
Off-Site Evacuation:
1. PA announcement for off-site evacuation.
2. Teachers will line-up class, remembering to bring emergency bag, student identification cards, and roll sheets.
3. Students will walk out the main gate in one continuous line to Indian Village Park, 6060 Hefley Street, Westminster, CA. following the route on our evacuation map.
CELL PHONE AND SMARTWATCH POLICY
At Finley Elementary, we recognize that cell phones and smartwatches can support communication and safety. To maintain a safe, focused, and respectful learning environment, the following expectations apply to the school day and all school-sponsored programs, including before-school supervision, recess, lunch, and after-school programs.
General Expectations
- Students may bring cell phones and smartwatches to school; however, devices must be turned off upon arrival.
- Devices may not be used during the school day, including morning playground supervision, instructional time, recess, lunch, transitions, or after-school programs, unless explicitly authorized by a staff member.
- Devices will be stored according to classroom or program procedures and returned at the end of the school day or program.
Cell Phones
- Cell phones must be turned in to the classroom teacher and stored in a designated, secure location.
- Cell phones may be used only before school (off the playground) and after dismissal, unless a staff member provides permission for educational or program purposes.
Smartwatches
- Smartwatches with cellular, messaging, internet, camera, or recording capabilities must be stored with cell phones during the school day and during after-school programs.
- Non-communication watches may be worn for timekeeping and educational purposes.
Privacy & Security
- Teachers and staff will ensure that stored devices are kept in a secure location.
- Students are responsible for retrieving their device at the designated time. Devices cannot be retrieved after school hours if staff have left campus.
- While reasonable care is taken, Finley Elementary School is not responsible for personal devices that are lost, stolen, or damaged. Families are encouraged to consider whether a device is necessary to bring to school.
Violations & Consequences
- If a student does not turn in a device as required, the student will be reminded of expectations.
- Repeated or serious violations may result in:
- Confiscation of the device
- The device being held in the office for parent/guardian pickup
- Loss of the privilege to bring a device to school or after-school programs
- Additional consequences aligned with the student conduct and technology acceptable use policies
SOAR Expectations for Technology Use
S – Stay Safe
- Use devices only when an adult allows it.
- Keep devices stored according to classroom or program procedures.
- Tell an adult if something online feels unsafe or uncomfortable.
O – Own Your Actions
- Follow classroom, school, and after-school program technology rules.
- Use devices only for approved purposes and at approved times.
A – Aim High
- Focus on learning and participation instead of personal technology.
R – Respect People and Things
- Respect others’ privacy; devices may not be used to take photos, record audio/video, or access social media while on campus.
Use only your own device and care for it responsibly.
